Auto numbering documents using context as prefix

$

Hi,

We are trying to make an automatic numbering system for certain product folders. Ideally, we would like to have a prefix that reflects the product folder name and then a sequential number (auto generated).

Our current system involves us manually changing the prefix in the OIR. Is there any way to add the context as a prefix by editing the OIR file so that this is automatic for all products created? The current number generating script looks like:

<AttrValue id="number" algorithm="com.ptc.windchill.enterprise.revisionControlled.server.impl.NumberGenerator">

                                   <Arg>PROJ-EMR:ZHD-</Arg>

        <Arg>{GEN:wt.enterprise.SequenceGenerator:WTDOCUMENTID_seq:6:0}</Arg>

</AttrValue>

Thanks,

Hannah

Importing and Exporting from Windchill

This process seems simple enough, but in Windchill it’s a nightmare. Here are the problems I get:

-I try to keep the instances out of my workspace for performance reasons. When I export from workspace, Windchill brings in every instance. My workspace goes from 2000 objects to 8000 objects. I have a custom view, that allows me to delete them faster, but this is time I don’t have.

-Import to workspace doesn’t work. It doesn’t recognize that the family table parts of the same name are in fact, the same parts.

-Importing deletes everything from session. It seems that the Pro/E core must be used to determine parent-child relationships.

-Some of the assemblies have hundreds or thousands of parts. This process is very slow. I have had this process take a week and as many as 23 premature exits in one day.

-If someone at my company renames the generic of a family table, I get incurable name conflicts and premature exits.

-If someone at my company creates one of the parts with the same name, I can’t rename my supplier’s part.

-to rename a part, I have to set my session to work offline with no server, rename the part, connect back to the server, and then save. This takes 20 minuets! 17 of the 20 minuets is just me staring at the hour glass.

-Once I have all of the models in my workspace I have to get rid of all of the name conflicts. Sometimes I use update, sometimes add works. Sometimes I have to delete all the instances, and then updates. I have thousands of these stupid name conflicts and each one need its own special attention.

-Some secret relations are created between parts. These cannot be found in the relationship viewer and are not ghost objects. It sometimes thinks that two totally unrelated parts must be checked in together. Sometimes I have to check-in parts that I would otherwise delete.

I am supposed to be a manager, providing technical guidance, not a Windchill-rat’s-nest-detangler. Of course it would be easier to have the supplier on our Windchill server, but that is not an option at the moment. Plus, they would hate me if I spread this curse to them.

Does anyone else work on large assemblies with and outside vender? If you could help me with any one of these problems I would appreciate it.

I am using Windchill PDMLink 9.1 with WF4 M110. We don’t use WTParts. Our network is a little slow

Retrieving a Attribute from an Object Using an Expression in a Workflow

$

Hi All,

I need to retrieve an attribute ("Operation") which which I have added to a Change Notice in a workflow expression - since the value of this attribute alters downstream activities.

So far I have got as far as:

wt.change2.WTChangeOrder2 co = (wt.change2.WTChangeOrder2)primaryBusinessObject;

String coOperation = ...

Also by using the above code, does it matter that I want to retrieve the attribute from a soft type of the change notice.

Any help would be great.

Windchill - EPM Document Master object is not unique ??

Hello. We have just moved from Intralink 3.4 to Windchill 10.0. We did this yesterday. As expected, we are encountering some bumps in the road. Most of our issues are because we are all learning a new system. Overall, the system seems to be working the way it should, and we are just experiencing problems because we don't know what we're doing.

But we have one problem that we can't seem to overcome. More than once, we've gotten errors when trying to upload a new object. Here are the steps taken leading up to this:

We create a new .prt which has an associated .drw. We are able to upload the .prt but are unable to upload the .drw file. There is an error message saying "Upload failed. See event manager for details." Okay, so checking the event manager, I see that the error says "EPM Document Master - xxxxx.drw is not unique". It sounds as though it thinks that an object with this name already exists in the database. But that is definitely not the case. I have searched, and there is nothing with this name. The part number also includes a job number that is unique within our company, so I just know that there's nothing with this part number in the database already. And it hasn't happened with one isolated item. It has happened three times already in two days. In all cases, we are able to upload the .prt file but got this error with the .drw file.

Does anybody have any idea what this error means or how we can get past it? We are a day and a half into our Windchill life, and other than this, things are going fairly smoothly. But not being able to check in new drawings is a big deal!! Help!!

Thanks...

-Bob

Please share how this integration can be acheived. How we can use SAP XI/PI middleware interfaces for this integartion.

Successfully installing Windchill9.1 on CentOS

I am creating development system for Windchill9.1 M040.

But, we have no money.

So, we used opensource solutions.

  • DELL PowerEdge T105
  • VMWare ESXi Server 4.0.0(208111) (free)
  • CentOS5.5 64bit (free)
  • Oracle Database 10g R2 Express Edition for Linux (free)
  • Windchill9.1M040(PDML+PJL) JAPANESE Edition

It's work! And good performance.

Does nobody have the same experience?

Pro/E crashed last night. I restarted and found I'd lost everything I'd done yesterday, despite saving every 1/2hr or so. You'd think I'd lose only what I hadn't saved, not everything since I last checked in the work. I'm on WF3 and (unfortunately) PDMLink/Windchill 8 point whatever. I seem to remember at my last job that a guy sent an e-mail around saying the same thing happened to him without warning when he reached (I seem to remember) 2 gig in cache size. I just checked, and mine's 2.14 gig. Hmmmm.... Ok, here's another weird thing. In the much superior Intralink, we had "frames" (a snapshot of all files at whatever iteration when you saved anything). Great feature! You could go back and look, or recover the state of your workspace at whatever frame you wanted. So, PDMLink won't have frames until Ver 9. So, why, in my cache, do I have almost 2 gig(!!) of "lid" (lid_110637.wfcont) and "sid" (sid_1209957.wfcont) files? These SEEM to be iterative versions of parts, assemblies, drawings, etc. as you can change the extension to ".prt, .asm, or .drw etc. and if you guess right you can actually open the file. So, are these what PTC uses behind the scenes to create frames? If so, and we don't have frames in PDMLink 8, why are they accumulating, and how do I delete them like we were able to clear the frames in Intralink? If I delete them all, will that corrupt my database or lose me more data? Better yet, if there are no frames now, how do I keep them from accumulating in the first place? Anyone else seen this? Any ideas on what the lid and sid files do? Thanks.

Workspace Refresh Time

Hi all,

can anyone please guide about the following issue of Workspace Refresh Time?

Problem:

If we are dealing with large assemblies-containing thousands of components in workspace and we are using the two columns viz., "Compare Status" and "Out of Date" in the workspace view" then workspace takes significant time to refresh everytime we refresh it.

How can we reduce the workspace refresh time?

Sandip

Windchill 9.1 Custom Workflow help

I am trying to create a custom workflow in Windchill 9.1. I want to have a decision made that will cause the workflow to travel one path or the other for a few items, merge back together for the next few items, then split for the last item based on the earlier decision. I think I can do it with Execute Expression Robots and variables. Any one out there able to help with the scripting, or perhaps suggest a better way.

Currently I use two consecutive workflows, but much of the information requested in the first, is also requested in the second. This means the initiator not only has to initiate two workflows, but also re-enter information that was previously entered in the first workflow. Being able to start one workflow, have the user choose a path and later use that same choice to determine the direction to take on the next fork, would greatly help ease user adoption to the system we've just begun to use.

Maintaining Rev History in Drawings

Using Windchill 10.0 and Creo Elements/wf5.

Would like to keep revision history in drawings which would include letter/number followed by a brief description of change. Current models have a parameter for REV and REV_DESCRIPTION. Looking for what others are doing and what is consensus on best practice/prodedure for having rev table in drawing automatically update with new rev and description and also keep previous rev and descriptions?

Thanks.
